English Dub Review: Wistoria: Wand and Sword “The Day of Departure”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Through the combined powers of wand and sword, Will defeats the Devander with his mageblade Wis.  Despite mass casualties and the leader of the attack going unknown, the capital begins to move toward recovery.  And so, the day of the magical academy graduation arrives.  After losing Rosti and having his path to the tower cut off, Will watches as the names of those ascending to the tower are read…

Our Take:
With the intense battle finally settled, the real story of Wistoria has officially begun!  I still find it hard to believe that the first sixteen episodes are the show’s actual prologue, but I guess that’s what makes it surprisingly good.  So, how does this actual journey start due to this knowledge?  With the aftermath, of course! This week’s episode takes a small breather from the season’s high-stakes dilemma to further explore the characters’ reactions to the sudden predicament.  This includes a brief reflection on the importance of Will’s first friendship with Rosty, with flashbacks set a few years before Rosty’s tragic demise.  Now, one has to wonder how Will’s story is actually beginning when he’s not eligible to ascend the tower.  Well, thanks to his creation of a new spell during the battle, Will actually meets the requirements needed to graduate with the others, giving him another chance to accomplish his dream.
With the previous episodes centering on Will’s self-discovery and acceptance, “The Day of Departure” looks to showcase him continuing his quest to reunite with Elfaria with his newfound spell, “Courage”.  With the tower being his next obstacle, Will may have to face even more challenges to impress the Magia Vanders, especially the mysterious figures that launched the attack during Terminalia.  The episode also shows that Rosty is still alive as a non-human, though it remains unclear whether he’ll play a role in the remaining episodes or is just there to observe Will’s growth.  It may not be as exciting as the season’s first four episodes, given its more dialogue-driven nature, but the episode’s aftermath has plenty of magic to kickstart the new chapter of Will’s spellbinding tale of wand and sword.
