Review: Invincible “Don’t Do Anything Rash”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
The Coalition of Planets takes the fight to Viltrum to confront Thragg and the remaining Viltrumites. One side shall stand and one shall fall.
OUR TAKE
We’re down to the final two episodes of the season, and if last season was any indication, Invincible knows how to go out with a bang. Last season around this time, we saw the Invincible War, as several versions of Mark terrorized the globe, and this season we have a full blown, all out intergalactic battle on Nolan’s homeworld to face Thragg, the cause of everything the empire has done since the death of Emperor Argall. We finally see Argall in a flashback about how Thaedus killed him, and naturally if Thaedus is voiced by Peter Cullen, AKA Optimus Prime, Argall must be voiced by Frank Welker, AKA Megatron. And even for the brief scene the two have together, it’s a treat to see them act together in it. After that, we also see Thragg instigate the Great Purge, turning countless Viltrumites on one another to “weed out the weakness”, which at least gives Conquest another couple lines. But it also highlights how the rot in the Empire would only continue to make it eat itself from within, even before Thaedus used the Scourge Virus. And after suffering further losses against the Coalition, that brought them down to only a few dozen.
The main event, however, is the battle itself, as even the less than forty Viltrumites are able to put up a strong front against the Coalition, which even has three (collectively since Mark and Oliver are both half) among them. Like any big fight in this show, it’s bloody and gory, but the main highlight comes when Thaedus, Nolan, and Mark all charge directly through the planet (with help from Space Racer’s gun) and destroy it, to the horror of the remaining Viltrumites. Thragg immediately retaliates by beheading Thaedus and popping his head like a grape, and then incapacitating Nolan and Mark after previously doing so with Oliver, but decides to leave them alive. After once again recovering from a massive battle (the second in three episodes, no less), Mark slowly realizes where the Viltrumites are headed next: Earth. That means we’re going full circle for the season finale next week as Thragg is probably going try to do what just happened to Viltrum on Earth. And compared to a handful of Marks or even one Conquest, they haven’t seen anything yet. It’s crazy to think that we’re already at the end of the season, but that’s what happens when you put out three episodes at once for the premiere!
