On This Day… 1776 Launches From Darren Aronofsky
Darren Aronofsky is once again pushing the boundaries of cinematic technology, but this time, he’s trading practical effects for artificial intelligence. The visionary director of The Whale and Black Swan has officially unveiled “On This Day… 1776,” an ambitious animated series that re-creates the American Revolution using generative AI.
The project is the first major release from Primordial Soup, the AI-focused production studio Aronofsky launched in 2025. Developed in a high-profile partnership with Google DeepMind, the series marks a significant moment in the intersection of Silicon Valley tech and Hollywood storytelling.
A Year-Long Historical Event
Timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the United States, “On This Day… 1776” follows a unique release schedule. Each short-form episode is released on the exact anniversary of the historical event it depicts.
The series debuted its first two installments on January 29, 2026, via TIME Studios’ YouTube channel:
-
“January 1: The Flag”: Dramatizes George Washington raising the Grand Union Flag on Prospect Hill.
-
“January 10: Common Sense”: Features a meeting between Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine, leading to the creation of the pamphlet that shifted the tide of colonial thought.
“Artist-Led” AI: The Human Element
While the visuals—ranging from sprawling 18th-century battlefields to intimate tallow-lit rooms—are generated using Google’s Veo video model, Aronofsky has been vocal about maintaining a “human-in-the-loop” philosophy.
Unlike many recent AI projects that have drawn ire for replacing human labor, Aronofsky’s series utilizes SAG-AFTRA voice actors to portray historical figures like Washington and Franklin. The production also features a human writers’ room led by Lucas Sussman, an original score by Jordan Dykstra, and a traditional post-production team for editing and color grading.
“This project is a glimpse at what thoughtful, creative, artist-led use of AI can look like,” said Ben Bitonti, President of TIME Studios. “It’s not replacing craft, but expanding what’s possible.”
Mixed Reception and the “Uncanny Valley”
Despite the pedigree of the creators, the series has already ignited a firestorm of debate. Early reactions to the trailer and initial episodes have been polarized. While some tech enthusiasts praise the ability to render complex historical scale on a short-form budget, many critics and animation fans have pointed to the “uncanny valley” effect of the AI-generated faces and movements.
Social media discourse has been particularly sharp, with some describing the aesthetic as “wax-like” or “plastic,” contrasting it with Aronofsky’s legendary reputation for gritty, tactile realism.
The Future of Primordial Soup
The Revolutionary War series is only the beginning of the collaboration between Aronofsky and Google. The partnership is expected to produce three major projects designed to test the limits of DeepMind’s generative tools.
As the U.S. marches toward its semiquincentennial in July, “On This Day… 1776” will continue to drop weekly episodes, serving as both a historical record and a controversial case study for the future of AI in the film industry.
New episodes of “On This Day… 1776” are available every Thursday on the TIME YouTube channel.

"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
