Overview (Spoilers Below):
The final battle against the Abyss reaches its ultimate conclusion.
Our Take:
Usually, a hero like Satou would be rescuing the damsel in distress from an unspeakable evil. However, the finale of Tales of Wedding Rings pulled a big switcheroo on those traditional roles, with Hime rescuing Satou from the clutches of the Abyss. It bears repeating that Hime and Satou are the anime couple worth rooting for throughout the series, particularly its second season. It’s not just their personal doubts that hinder their relationship, but also the fact that they are both equally strong and supportive. Satou rescued Hime from the Abyss’s corruption a few episodes ago, and now Hime decides to return the favor by saving him from the Abyss. If that’s not the power of love, I’m not entirely sure what is.
Either way, the battle has been won, and Satou is now claimed to be the most powerful being in existence, much to his concern about also being considered a threat. More importantly, he gets to live happily ever after with Hime and the other princesses back in Japan. It has been one heck of a year-long journey for this anime, especially when referring to its seductive nature and harem elements, but we have finally made it to the end of this bizarre adventure. Unless it moves forward with another season, this is a commendable and even heartfelt conclusion to the latest harem anime. Sure, it’s no “Return of the King” in terms of emotional depth, and Satou’s fear of being a threat to the nations made it feel open-ended. However, it gets the job done by letting Hime and Satou finally get the happy ending they deserve.
