In a delightful bit of corporate synergy and genuine affection, 20th Century Studios has released a new promotional clip for James L. Brooks’ upcoming film “Ella McCay,” featuring none other than the cast of The Simpsons.
The crossover makes perfect sense: James L. Brooks is a legendary figure in Hollywood who developed The Simpsons alongside Matt Groening and Sam Simon, serving as an executive producer and a driving creative force for the show’s entire run. Now, as Brooks returns to the director’s chair for his first feature film since 2010’s How Do You Know, Springfield’s favorite family is stepping up to hype it up.
Lisa Simpson’s Existential Crisis Cured?
The clip, titled “Lisa’s New Favorite Movie,” features Marge and Lisa Simpson leaving a theater, engaging in a frantic, emotional debrief of the film.
Lisa, known for her precocious intellect and tendency toward melancholy, is absolutely floored by the movie. “Why should I control myself when finally a movie gets me!” she exclaims, tears streaming down her face. She goes on to praise the film for showing a woman who encourages her and, in a darkly hilarious turn, admits the movie “makes me stop looking into that damn void!”
Marge, ever the grounded mother, attempts to temper Lisa’s enthusiasm (“It’s a very, very almost great movie”), but even she can’t deny the emotional impact, admitting that she’s crying right now.
A Legendary Director Returns
Ella McCay follows the story of an idealistic young politician (played by Emma Mackey) who juggles family issues and a challenging new job while preparing to take over the governorship of her state. The film boasts a stacked cast including Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Ayo Edebiri, and Albert Brooks.
For fans of James L. Brooks, this film is a major event. The director is responsible for classics like Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, and As Good as It Gets. The promo cleverly nods to Brooks’ signature style—films that balance comedy and drama, often resulting in the “happy crying” we see from Lisa and Marge.
The clip ends with the duo reciting the film’s hopeful tagline: “There’s hope for all of us.”
“Ella McCay” arrives in theaters on December 12.
