HELL HATH NO FURY: Indie Animated Pilot Heathens Goes Viral, Demanding a Full Series

A new player has broken through the increasingly crowded independent animation scene, and it’s dragging its crew straight to Hell. “Heathens,” an original action dark fantasy series from Studio Psycho, has achieved massive viral success with its pilot episode, racking up over two million views and converting 150,000 new subscribers in its first weeks on YouTube.

The project, created by Nezhahah (Neda Lay), has established immediate cult traction, positioning itself in the lineage of breakout indie animation hits like Murder Drones and The Amazing Digital Circus. The immediate success now launches the series into a high-stakes hunt for the funding necessary to produce a full, serialized season.

The Synopsis: Chaos in the Underworld

Heathens introduces us to a chaotic underworld setting where bright-eyed demon Axel leads his crew, Aura and Carlos, into Hell’s most dangerous gigs. The synopsis promises a blend of dark humor, ride-or-die camaraderie, and high-octane, anime-inspired action, all set against a backdrop of a devilish society tipping toward chaos.

The debut 10-minute pilot, titled “Hellhounders,” immediately resonated with adult animation fans seeking raw, stylish, and character-driven dark fantasy. The show’s style utilizes 2D hand-drawn animation with a heavy emphasis on high-octane fight choreography.

From Kickstarter Success to Viral Phenomenon

The show’s creator, Nezhahah (Neda Lay), an animator with professional credits in TV and feature production (including work at Glitch Productions), was inspired to create Heathens while exploring themes of identity and survival through demon characters. The pilot was brought to life through a successful Kickstarter campaign, where nearly 600 backers contributed over $70,000.

Now, the organic, viral success has created a massive audience eager for more. As producer Morgan Flint notes, the show is focused on delivering characters that audiences will “want to journey with through the depths of Hell, especially when they’re at their messiest.”

The Call for Funding

The biggest challenge facing Studio Psycho, co-founded by Flint, is translating this viral demand into sustainable production. While a full season is already written, and early development toward Episode 1 is underway, the continued production of the 25-minute serialized episodes requires external support.

“Heathens is a deeply personal story, and I want to tell it in its entirety,” stated creator Nezhahah (Neda Lay). “Indie is the path that makes that possible… I’m not here to tell a story of Heathens, I’m here to tell the story of Heathens.”

With its massive YouTube debut acting as a concrete demonstration of demand, Heathens is now actively seeking additional funding partnerships, investors, or platform support to complete its conquest and deliver the full story to its rapidly growing fanbase.
