English Dub Review: Rock Is a Lady’s Modesty “Rock Lady”

Overview (Spoilers Below): Rebellion is the soul of rock, so who cares what anyone thinks?  Rock Lady’s passion roars through every beat, and they’ll prove it to Bacchus, the crowd, and themselves.

Our Take: All of their practices and the challenges the ladies have encountered have led to this exact moment.  The musical battle against Bitter Ganache was merely a warm-up compared to what they’re up against, as they find themselves competing against a boy band that’s more popular by appearance than skill.  Given their opponents’ false acclaim and aggressive fanbase, Lilisa and the others have to go all out to get the crowd cheering for real.  Unsurprisingly, they did just that, but only by focusing on impressing themselves rather than the audience, particularly Otoha, who regains her experience of playing for her own happiness upon sharing her passion with others.  In a way, this crucial moment marks the season’s closure for the drummer, who went from enjoying the drums by herself to sharing that joy with Lilisa and the others. Its ending hints that Rock Lady will continue their quest to perform at Fuji Rock despite the upcoming challenges of being an instrumental band.  However, “Rock Lady” also serves as a dynamic and even heartwarming conclusion to their underdog tale of rock n roll if a second season isn’t happening.  Honestly, I’m hoping the show continues with a second season, as I was as surprised by the series as everyone else was by Rock Lady.  The English dub can be a bit of a mess in terms of performances, and its straightforward formula and questionable yet amusing vulgarity won’t be for everyone.  Nonetheless, its energetic direction, inspiring messages, and Band-Maid’s motion capture performances are enough to keep me cheering until the very end.
