OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Morty is tasked with capturing Rick or face his punishment, while Rick has camped in a different, more peaceful universe.OUR TAKEHere we are, at the beginning of the end, at least for Rick and Morty comics published specifically by Oni Press, as we kick off the six part (maybe seven part?) miniseries, Rick and Morty – The End. That’s sure a final sounding name, especially for something coming out while the Rick and Morty television show is still four or five seasons away from ending. This series is basically a sequel to Rick and Morty vs The Universe, picking up from the cliffhanger where the last issue of that left off, though without any tie-in issues to mess with the pacing or cause any inconsistencies with the writing like that mini series did. And so far, at least going by this first issue, it looks like it’s more of a Morty story with him as the protagonist and point of view character and Rick as the antagonist. And yeah, I guess considering this meant to be the end of this side of the franchise, putting our two title characters at odds seems like the obvious way to go. The better question is how they plan to stretch that conflict out for five or six more issues across nearly half of next year. And apparently a sizable part of the answer is CAMEOS! Lots and lots and LOTS of cameos, even ones for no explicable reason, starting with the Ball Fondlers that long time fans will know from numerous short voiceless appearances across the series, as Morty goes to their corner of the multiverse thinking Rick might be there…for some reason. And as he starts trying to kill them all, he begins to adopt Rick’s cosmic nihilism of viewing everything except for himself fake or not really alive…which is kind of psychopathic when you phrase it like that, which I don’t think the franchise has ever fully portrayed Rick as before. And it looks like Morty will be joined in this journey by Captain Planet Expy Planetina, Memory Parasite Construct Sleepy Gary, an aged Meeseeks, and a member of the Alphabetrians, the letter D of an unknown element, all apparently there to assist Morty with his journey. And based on a variant cover for next issue, Mr. Nimbus (who controls the police) will also be joining them at some point. As for Rick, he’s in a universe with no Morty or Jerry, only Beth, Summer and Beth’s Black pilot husband Gerry (how you pronounce that is anyone’s guess). But there you go, our opening curtain for the end of the comics. Kinda mid, hope the others aren’t.
