Overview:
Jin reminisces about everything he experienced during his childhood.
Our Take:
The first half of the episode wrapped up the fight between Naito and the Momotaro he was facing off against. Naito began to win rather easily, but it sounds like there will be a rematch further down the line, with Tsukuyomi instead, according to his divination abilities. Tsukuyomi uses tarot cards to tell the future, and Clifford Chapin voices him, so I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him.
If you’re an anime veteran, then you’re no stranger to sad backstories. I’m not trying to exaggerate, but this was one of the most sad ones I’ve seen in a long time. Jin’s father was a Momotaro, and he wanted to grow up to be just like him. It turns out his mother and sister were Oni, and his father killed them. We know that Jin is an Oni as well, so I’ll admit I was a little confused at first. Wouldn’t Jin’s father have known that his wife was an Oni before he married her, at the very least?
Turns out that Oni can manifest their abilities and things at different stages throughout their life. It must have been poor timing for Jin’s mother and sister to show signs of being Oni at the same time. Seeing this horrific scene play out in front of him led to Jin awakening to his abilities, and now we know where he got all his stitched-up scars. His own father did it to him, and I found that really sad.
