OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Yaguida shows up as a new “teacher” to confront Sanda directly just in time for his Santa powers to stop working. Meanwhile, Ono resurfaces and makes a shocking confession to Fuyumura.OUR TAKEOn the fifth week of Sanda, my true love gave to me: five sleepless nights, four Santa hugs, three detected lies, more supporting cast, and a buff Santa in his undies! Okay, is it me or does it seem like they’re just making up these Santa powers and drawbacks as they go along? Like at the top of the episode, it’s said that anyone with Santa powers cannot fall in love or they will literally die. I kinda get that from a “Santa is some sort of guardian spirit and shouldn’t be in love with mere mortals” kind of perspective, but this is a power that’s passed on through descendants. Are we to believe that Sanda’s parents or grandparents or however long this Santa power has been in existence didn’t fall in love? The setting of this show is only sixty five years ahead of ours, so depending on when these mandates were implemented, I guess Sanda’s parents may have been arranged to be married like Sanda is with his government mandated fiance Niko and just didn’t fall in love before they had him, but…I guess we’ll find out soon. Oh yeah, Sanda has a fiance, something that was kinda implied but now we’re actually meeting, and it seems like she may have more of an interest in Sanda than she initially lets on. However, it looks like Fuyumura ALSO has started growing attached to him, hmm……but that will have to wait, as Fuyumura’s other love interest, the previously missing Ono, suddenly appears once again! Turns out she wasn’t kidnapped or missing or dead, she actually ran away because she had reached puberty in her sleep one night, both of which are apparently big no nos at this school. Yeah, apparently sleeping is forbidden so as to stave off puberty before graduation, which…just seems so backwards and I can only imagine backfiring for these kids later in life. You want the birthrate to go UP, right?! Although this is coming from Oshibu, who also took out his own ninety year old heart and is threatening to punish Yaguida with it by putting it into him and making him age ninety years if he fails again. And look, I’m not fully studied up on heart health or the impacts of sleep (my sleep schedule’s all kinds of messed up personally) but I am going to have to question the science on this. Then again, this is also the show where a guy can turn into a big old man, so maybe science isn’t really the priority here.
