English Dub Review: Ranma ½ “”Okonomiyaki” Means “I Love You””

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Ranma reunites with an old childhood friend, Ukyo, who has a grudge against him and his father for a surprising reason.OUR TAKEAh, the old “childhood friend” trope in harem manga, where one girl knew the protagonist the longest and therefore typically has feelings for him in that scenario. And if that didn’t give away the game right away, Ukyo, while initially teased as being both a boy and Ranma’s secret brother, is actually someone he knew growing up. Yep, we’re also doing the “when we were kids, I thought you were a boy” trope. Can you tell this was written in the eighties? Anyway, that all seems fine, but then it turns out that the grudge she has with Ranma’s dad is that he agreed with her dad to have Ranma marry her, with a cart as dowry…only to then flee town with the cart with Ranma none the wiser about what was happening, seeing the chasing and enraged Ukyo as just someone sad that their friend was leaving. Well, that may not have been Ranma’s fault, but it is now his problem, as Ukyo is out for blood. Actually, to be more accurate, she’s out to make Okonomiyaki, which is a type of savory pancake made in Japan according to Wikipedia. Sounds like Japanese Latke, yum. I gotta try me one of those. So yeah, basically Ukyo’s gimmick is that she is constantly making okonomiyaki with a giant spatula like that scene in Uncle Buck…EXCEPT that movie came out at least a few months after the chapters this episode is adapting would be coming out, so there’s always a small chance someone read that in Japan and just decided to put it in a John Candy movie of that time. Anyway, a girl mad at Ramna, must be a day that ends in Y, though once she sees that Ranma and his supposed REAL fiance Akane don’t get along, she suddenly backs down from the fight she started, even throwing a pancake with a heart on it straight at Ranma. I guess this means she thinks she’s still in the running, which is honestly quite sad to know. But maybe if we’re lucky, she’ll at least be funny about her attempts just like Shampoo has been. We should only have four more episodes in this season left and we still have one more girl from the ED to show up and crush on Ranma, so it looks like things will be pretty backed in the weeks ahead. Maybe they’ll be fun though?
