Let there be Cake! And FionnaOVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Fionna and Cake face new challenges since saving their newly canonized universe, while Huntress Wizard finds a mortally injured Finn and looks for help from Simon.OUR TAKEAfter over two years off (because that’s just how Western shows are now, I guess), Fionna and Cake, the spin-off and sequel to Adventure Time, is finally back with a new season! I quite enjoyed the first season as it tackled the same complex emotional range that the original series did but made for an audience that had grown up with that show, while also making use of continuity and new concepts in interesting ways without needing to rely too much on nostalgia, as well having a surprisingly novel use of the Multiverse when that was starting to become a worn out idea. And with that first season having a pretty solid ending, that naturally means that the story has to build up again, with a new storyline connecting Fionna and Cake’s world with the main universe of Ooo. It’s good to see a lot of the characters living well in a now slightly more magical but mostly normal life, though while Fionna has gotten a lot of thanks from her neighbors, others like her old boss Queenie are still causing problems, including reclaiming old property that Fionna and her friends were sprucing up for themselves. Oh, and Fionna and Cake are once again having weird dreams, in this case being them accidentally killing all of their friends, but I’m sure that’s nothing to worry about.Meanwhile in Ooo, the main impetus for THAT world’s storyline starts up as Huntress Wizard (Finn’s love interest during the later stretch of Adventure Time), finds Finn feeling the delayed effects of injury from that quest he took with Simon early last season. By the way, Huntress Wizard is now on her FOURTH voice actor, with Ashly Burch taking over from Maria Bamford, Jenny Slate, and Olivia Olson. I’m certainly interested to see where that goes, and for Fionna to meet Finn as has been advertised, though I do hope that we don’t lose sight of whose names are in the title. Similarly, while the new intro to the show is a very cool anime-esque OP, I do wonder if it’s a bit too cool for it. The last intro felt weird and chaotic in a way that embodied the zaniness covering up for emotional vulnerability, while this seems just…cool to look at. But thankfully it looks like the show will be doing weekly single releases (a pleasant surprise considering some shows just dump the whole season at once nowadays) so we’ll have plenty of time to watch and speculate about where things go from here!
