It’s not a fig, it’s a date!OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)The Chidori boys and Kikyo girls properly hang out together for the first time, and later, Kaoruko invites Rintaro out to an aquarium.OUR TAKEToday is a glorious day in this months long journey of watching the lengthy named “The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity”, and that is because we seem to be finally over all of the stupid nonsense that was that whole feuding schools stuff. Rintaro’s friends (they all have separate names but for this purpose they all kinda blend together) are all cool with hanging out with Kaoruko and Subaru (whose name keeps getting pronounced like a pizza food court stand instead of the car, but I digress), and Subaru, as we saw last episode, has fully gotten over her self loathing and distrust of other people she thinks might be a threat to Kaoruko’s safety. So now, everyone is friends and I’m sure there will be no further conflict about these groups being friends and getting closer with one another! Or at least that’s what I would hope given that they’ve stretched out all of that school stuff way longer that it should have ever been acknowledged. And I saw this knowing full well that it’s only been eight episodes, that’s just to show how much my patience for that wore out by the end of even the first episode. Then we get to the second half of the episode, where in Rintaro and Kaoruko decide to just go hang out together, nothing special going on. Well, Kaoruko may intend it differently, but as far as Rintaro is concerned, he’s just hanging out with his study buddy! That is until they find a lost kid and said kid describing her crush on a boy at her school, which finally gives Rintaro that last piece of the mind puzzle to realize that he is in fact in love with Kaoruko. Now, the finding a lost kid at an aquarium thing is already a cliche in these stories, and the way that she is there specifically to nudge Rintaro just enough to understand his own feelings feels just a tad contrived, but hey, progress is progress. So, now we have two people who like each other, understand that they like the other person, but not knowing for sure if the other person likes them back. Well, in Kaoruko’s case, she seems pretty sure based on Subaru’s account and seems to be pushing things along, so hey, mission accomplished there. Now, with five episodes left, let’s see how these two finally make that one last push and take the big plunge together.
