Overview (Spoilers Below): Mogura and his companions uncover the truth about the Samejima family, the island’s legend, and the merfolk.

Our Take: To the surprise of no one, the Samejima family turned out to be the puppeteers behind the spiritual merfolk regarding their heinous plan.  Although the legend of the merfolk turned out to be more tragic than we realize, the royal family uses this tragedy to make the islanders bow to their whim.  It’s a classic selfish tradition that showcases the nefarious nature of this high and mighty family.  However, their true nature was just the start of the many secrets that were revealed in the penultimate episode.  The tale of the merfolk consists of a mother whose child was taken away from her, and her negative emotions transformed her into a monstrous spirit, hence the island being changed to “Merfolk Island”.  Additionally, it appeared that the Samejima ancestors had arrived on the island where Yaeko’s grandfather resided years ago. Essentially, “The Merfolk and the Bakeneko” concluded the season’s final mission in a similar fashion to the team’s previous ghost-catching adventures.  What seemed to be a thrilling confrontation between Mogura and the Samejimas actually turned out to be another underwhelming and convoluted embarrassment.  I’m not sure why I expected it to be anything other than what the series provided, but I was hoping for something more, beyond the president being a man baby.  But, at the very least, we’re just one episode away from being done with this disappointing chore, which happens to be the aftermath of the confrontation.  I’m sure that those who read the manga would have a much better time with this.  Personally, it’s still not my cup of tea.
