Our Take:
We’ve encountered plenty of spirits and aliens so far this season, more so of the former than the extraterrestrials. However, this arc has the teens discover something much larger than the formidable ghosts: a kaiju with a retro-reflector suit. However, it’s not just an ordinary kaiju they’re facing. It’s a space kaiju with powers that are literally shocking! Where’s Kaiju No. 8 when you need him? Initially, I was hesitant that the show would only feature ghosts and aliens as allies or antagonists. But the introduction of the kaiju in the previous episode proved otherwise.
The series seemed to be showing potential in going all out with its bizarre premise by throwing in whatever creature they want, outside of spiritual threats. On the other hand, it could also run the risk of being overly cluttered or even unnecessary. Fortunately, the penultimate episode of season two managed to accomplish the former, especially since the kaiju happens to be an extraterrestrial one. Similar to previous episodes, “Hey, It’s a Kaiju” takes full advantage of the battle’s scope through its immersive animation, mainly through Okarun, Momo, and Aira battling the giant kaiju. At the same time, it also showcases the amusing chemistry the series is known for outside the battlefield. But, of course, even with their powers combined, the kaiju seemed to be a pretty formidable opponent, meaning that they’ll have to rely on alien nanotechnology to defeat it.
This change in strategy effectively sets the stage for what could be the show’s most insane finale yet. Yes, I would even mention that it might have the opportunity to improve over the season one finale. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it followed a similar strategy of concluding the season on a cliffhanger. Regarding its animation and a thrilling confrontation with the kaiju, the penultimate episode would very likely keep kaiju fans occupied as they wait for this week’s new episode of Kaiju No. 8.
