Comic Review: Rick and Morty vs. The Universe – Beth ‘Til Death

Beth to left of me, Beth to right, here I am, stuck in the middle with JerrOVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Beth, Space Beth, and Jerry go on a mission for Rick to secure a back up for the universe while Rick and Morty are on the run from…the universe.OUR TAKEWe’re on to our second of three tie-in issues for the Rick and Morty vs. The Universe comic event, and while the first focused on Summer, this one centers on the parents, and the next one is apparently about Morty, which seems like an odd use of a tie-in issue when he’s one of the title characters. Like at that point, why not just make it a regular issue of the series? Anyway, this one actually focuses on characters who are NOT part of the main story, so it makes more sense for them to get a tie-in. In this case, it’s Jerry, Beth, and Space Beth (the one I think is the clone) doing stuff that will probably pay off in the fourth main issue, and since Space Beth is the most competent one with Regular Beth in close second, they end up trying to do the thing while Jerry ends up being well meaning but stupid, causing them to fail. This is more or less the expected dynamic between these three as we have seen in the show, but for some reason the dialogue for this comic feels…I dunno, somehow more cartoony? I wouldn’t say the regular Rick and Morty dialogue is by any means the most realistic, but it did at least make a consistent feel for all three of these characters even when they’re not interacting with each other, but for some reason this feels off.On a related note the two Beths and Jerry find out the secret mastermind behind the casino they attempt to rob, and it is revealed to be another Jerry! Specifically, a Jerry that Rick cloned and then dumped, making him Space Jerry. And I have a feeling this was just a funny coincidence, because the most recent season of the show also had Jerry meet a slightly more actualized version of himself that wasn’t straight up evil but definitely had less integrity, which I would say is a more interesting parallel to Space Beth than this Space Jerry. They also try to do some ambiguity by having there be an explosion and the surviving Jerry have remnants that look similar to both Jerrys’ clothing, but…come on, it’s the normal Jerry. And with that, we are more than half way done with this event, just in time for another event, Rick and Morty: The End, which is heavily implied to be the swan song for the decade long run of Rick and Morty comics at Oni Press. We’ll have more information on that as it develops, and hopefully it will be better than this tie-in. For now, let’s return to the main story with the third issue, this one solely focusing on Rick, Rick, Rick, and…MORE Ricks!
