Overview
Insomnia sends Bob on a creative spree in the kitchen, but at what cost?
Our Take
Ever see the classic Chris Nolan film Insomnia? Welp, take that, add in a heaping helping of South Park’s “Creme Fraiche” episode, and that’s kinda what we’re getting for the season 15 finale of Bob’s Burgers. The only real difference is instead of using sex to help solve Bob’s obsession with cooking Linda naturally chooses medicinal means which is definitely the more Hollywood way of solving all of life’s problems.
Ryan Mattos definitely deserves a shout-out for the technical prowess that came with this week’s episodes. A lot of shadowing, the slight turns in Bob’s reality that seems to be going haywire due to lack of sleep, and a talking book character as done by Kumail Nanjiani, there was a lot going on this week from an aesthetic viewpoint that helped me forget about the slightly more unoriginal plot brought on by Jon Schroeder.
Overall, “Insomnibob” had a solid premise but really doesn’t stick the landing due to the fact that we really don’t get to see Bob go that crazy that we haven’t seen before. Films like Fight Club helped devolve the human spirit as a result of lack of sleep while Bob’s Burgers take was “throw a pill at it” until he didn’t and we got a pickle portrait to boot. A few more left turns could’ve taken this idea a lot further, instead, we’ll tackle where this episode lands in some of the highlights of the season in next week’s season review.
