OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Kunagi, Kaoru, and their new ally Arata search the desolate dystopian lands for any sign of Tsutsumi.OUR TAKEWait, does this episode actually have a title? I put in Cat Max because that’s what the episode title was a couple weeks ago, but now it’s got no title? Well, that may be indicative of the episode itself because there isn’t really much of a focus area this week, with us mainly seeing how life for humans has very decisively degenerated into a dystopian hellscape in the months following the outbreak of the Nyandemic. We do check in with Kunagi, Kaoru, and that guy they picked up named Arata (who is now also in the segments at the end about cat care despite him not knowing any of the dead characters, so I guess we can rule those out as flashbacks and more just non-canon comedic bits), as they are now part of a settlement of survivors lead by a woman known only as Grandma, but their part in the episode is pretty minimal. We see some weirdo road warrior types shaking down some poor soul for pictures of cats, and later a guy who was barely able to find some alcohol in this destroyed society, but is apparently flushed with enough oil to make veggie tempura, though their involvement feels pretty tangential to the story as a whole. What’s notable to me, though not surprising, is that despite everyone knowing full well that cats are very much connected to the destruction of their previous civilization, if not fully responsible, no one seems to have lost their love FOR their feline friends as a result of this. Personally, I would be at the very least a bit peeved. But from the start, this series has been about LOVING cats as much as it is about making them a substitute for zombies, which is…definitely a clash of tones to be sure. Currently the task at hand is finding Tsutsumi, who they can verify is alive and helping people out, but after that…what’s the plan? Do they try to find out what the cause of all of this was? Will a faction emerge that wants to wipe out these fuzzy fur balls? Or will they try to find some immunity to the virus so they can at least keep being human and bring back those who have been turned? Simply put, I don’t really know where this story is going, and while that’s not necessarily a problem AT THE MOMENT, it could very well be if this aimlessness goes on for too long.
