English Dub Review: My Dress-Up Darling “I Wuuuuv Slice-of-Life Scenes! ♡♡♡”
Overview:
Amane tells Marin and Wakana about his past and how he got into cosplay.
Our Take:
Production I.G. needs to get with Cloverworks on their animation techniques. Every episode of My Dress-Up Darling has looked fantastic. I feel like I’m in the theater watching each episode. I understand that the movement in a slice-of-life show is probably easier to animate than an action shonen where characters are moving all around. But it can’t be overstated how beautiful My Dress-Up Darling has been in its second season.
This episode was great for getting into your feels. Amane is a guy who likes to cosplay as female characters, and as you can imagine, a lot of people probably aren’t kind when that is his preferred hobby. What I loved from Amane’s backstory was learning that cosplaying gave him the confidence to make friends and eventually get a girlfriend. What I didn’t love was when he said that his girlfriend found his outfits and freaked out. But it worked out because he dumped her instead of giving up on the hobby he loved.
There are so many awful things that happen in this world that I’ve always found it interesting that people hate certain hobbies so much. If it’s not hurting anyone who cares? Guys may not traditionally cosplay as female characters, but if it brings someone happiness and confidence, who am I to judge? On its face, My Dress-Up Darling is an ecchi fanservice show, but underneath it might be one of the most wholesome shows you could watch.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
