Overview
Wolf jumps into the amateur wrestling ring. Judy trains a new employee at the Point & Shoot.
Our Take
Hey everyone, despite what the show’s synopsis tells you, there’s no such thing as an “amateur wrestling ring”. Amateur wrestling is the brand of sport you would see in the Olympics or in high school competitions. A wrestling ring is where paid professionals are paid to take part in a choreographed effort in an attempt to entertain paying fans. So actually, Wolf is a local professional wrestler and is in no part attempting to be an amateur wrestler. In fact, THESE outcomes aren’t even pre-planned so we’re actually getting something closer to GCW Bloodsport than we are WWE.
Judy training a new employee doesn’t get anywhere near as interesting as Wolf and Beef’s…beef and I’m not even sure why it was even included. The dramatic elements of professional wrestling play out both in and out of the ring for The Great North and the results are pretty solid. The signs in the audience are a hoot, and fans of professional wrestling will get a big kick out of some solid in-ring action that features a few surprises.
The Great North returns with a new episode not until mid-August, but in the meantime, this week’s episode is pretty damn funny. Even the Judy training bit devolves in a bit of a Western but it’s largely overshadowed by the wrestling gimmick that is delivered rather flawlessly.
