OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Kunagi’s group settles in at a supermarket with a bunch of other survivors, while Kaoru finds a friend she thought had been gone.OUR TAKEThis episode starts with a bit of narration documenting a seemingly innocuous incident at a catfood company where a sudden explosion occurred. Some pointed out this was a sign of bad things to come, but the videos they put out were instantly removed, so clearly there’s a conspiracy going on here that led to this so called “nyandemic”. Picking up where the last episode left off, Gaku, the head of the pet shop and Kaoru’s brother, tells the crew that he is quickly changing and warning them to flee before he turns completely. And considering we see Tanishi, the guy with the goggles, get cat-sumed (eh? eh?) in the flash forward at the start of last episode, we know his days are numbered too. Still, it’s clear that this is meant to be more an absurd comedy than anything to really take seriously, at least going by the news reports and how people are just…turning into cats in a goofy kind of way. Or at the very least, it’s meant to be some sort of mix of the two to keep some tension while also embracing how weird this all is. I guess we’ll see as the story develops what we’re really supposed to be feeling in the end. It’s also clear that something is really up with Kunagi, besides the stuff that was already implied earlier. We already went over how he has no memories of his life but does know everything about cats, and now he’s finding himself having a good time playing with them even when the point is to lure them all away. Maybe there’s some connection between him and the explosion at the beginning? Only time will tell. We also meet Kaoru’s friend Tsutsumi who works part time at the supermarket that the group ends up sheltering in. Apparently she has a strong allergy to cats but still loves them just the same, as shown in a flashback when she and Kaoru first met and saved a cat that was stuck in a tree. So, we have someone whose body literally rejects the presence of cats but also wants to take care of them, which I’m sure means…something related to the themes here! But it seems that will have to wait, as it’s clear that the supermarket will be under attack in the next episode, meaning a lot more people are about to get a lot more fur.
