Scottish animation house Bonnie and Braw Cartoons is taking a leap into adult animation with its newly announced series, The Rejects. This irreverent and heartfelt project focuses on the often-overlooked sidekicks of history’s most iconic legends, promising a fresh and humorous perspective on well-known tales.
Currently in paid development with support from Screen Scotland and the international LGBTQ+ Canadian network OutTV, The Rejects is shaping up to be a significant co-production. Emmy Award-winning producer Rick Mischel, known for his work on popular adult animated series like Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites, as well as the upcoming Sony Pictures Animation feature GOAT, is attached to co-produce. The writing will be led by Julie Bower, the creator of the BAFTA-winning series So Awkward, ensuring a blend of sharp wit and engaging storytelling.
This Canada-Scotland collaboration will also involve Artists Animation Studio, a Canadian studio founded by Mischel. The studio aims to push the boundaries of 2D animation, combining high-end visual storytelling with innovative creative techniques. According to Deadline who was the first to make the report:
Philomena star Sophie Kennedy Clarke leads as the Lady of the Lake—a magical badass with anger issues after King Arthur made an unwanted pass and then ran off with her sword. But at the heart of the story is Dr. John Watson: reimagined as a brilliant yet insecure, openly gay ex-military doctor whose heart gets broken by Sherlock Holmes, prompting him to assemble a new team of overlooked legends including Friar Truck and Tantor the Elephant to stop a threat even Holmes couldn’t handle.
With a talented team at the helm, including experienced writers and producers from acclaimed animated shows, The Rejects is generating buzz as an exciting addition to the landscape of adult animation. Keep an eye out for further updates on this promising series as it continues through development.
