OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Sophia and Louis decide to go on a date. What could possibly go wrong!OUR TAKEIt’s the calm before the storm episode! Although based on what we’ve seen so far with this show, it’s probably more like the calm before the light drizzle. As mentioned, the main focus is on our main couple fully being a couple and having a good time, even having their first kiss! And if I had actually grown to be invested all that much for either of them over these past ten weeks, I would probably care, but as this sentence structure would probably imply, I really do not. Sophia is still just inching her way towards having some inkling of confidence in herself or acknowledging that she deserves happiness, which was endearing for the first few episodes but has quickly made her quite annoying in my eyes. Meanwhile, Louis has continued to just be the model love interest who is slowly but surely helping her to let her guard down, so points to him for hanging in there. They’re not a bad couple by any means, it really just comes down to the two of them not being very interesting to watch. Even of the main couples in the shows I am watching and reviewing right now, they probably rank towards the bottom of the list, if only because they’re just such a snorefest. But the main development in this episode, aside from the kiss if you care about that, is that Sophia is kidnapped by the terrorist group Daybreak on her way home from the date. Specifically, she is taken by Leohart and his men, with Leohart force feeding her a drug to knock her out after his men threw a gas that made her temporarily lose her abilities, which she definitely would have knocked them all out with if she were able. This will lead us into the final two episodes where the stuff with the anti-monarchy terrorists is finally addressed and resolved, with Leohart, the dark skinned minority who came from poverty, makes his case against the fair skinned protagonist who is loyal to the state. Yeah, the implications with all of this are not the best in terms of avoiding being problematic, but it’s kind of hard to expect much better from this series by now. And hey, next week gives us some time on Leohart’s backstory and motivations, so that will hopefully be a nice change of pace from all of this white bread stuff that we’ve had going on the past couple weeks.
