English Dub Review: Once Upon a Witch’s Death “Words and Disasters and Ceremonies”

Overview (Spoilers Below): Meg attends a special magic ceremony held once every 20 years.

Our Take: The season’s first half concluded on a sweeter note, with Meg finally earning her witches nickname: The Witch of Lapis.  All she had to do was not be selfish in her attempt to make people cry.  However, Meg’s quest to collect those tears perseveres as she reunites with Sophie to attend a magic ceremony that’s been held every twenty years.  This event is far from what we experienced at the Otherworld festival, as it introduces the Council’s latest project that could save the Earth’s connection to the magic world.  This strategy, known as the Planet’s Core Project, involves connecting the Earth’s core with an artificial one created from magic ore.  Whether this plan would succeed remains to be seen, but from the looks of things, it could serve a role in a much bigger threat compared to Meg’s curse. Additionally, the episode introduces us to two more members of the Seven Sages.  One of them is Eldora, the Witch of Demise, who was last seen at the end of the previous episode and warns Meg of the consequences of losing something important if she lifts her curse.  Compared to the other Sages we witnessed throughout the series, Eldora seemed to possess a more somber and melancholy aura, which makes sense considering her nickname has “demise” in its title.  The other is a young girl named Chloe, the Witch of Words, who happens to be a human-spirit hybrid due to her inability to use magic.  She also comes equipped with her assistant, Wendy, who poses as Chloe’s body double to ensure her real identity is safe.  Chloe is also another victim of Meg’s super-sized ego, and yes, their time at the festival together helped elevate the episode’s exposition-filled plot, which highlighted their humorous chemistry.  However, the introduction of the Planet’s Core Project could bring a damper to Meg’s tear-collecting venture once more.
