OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Morihito Otogi, a descendant of an ogre bloodline, reunites with his longtime childhood friend Nico Wakatsuki, who left years ago to become a witch, and is assigned as her bodyguard and familiar.OUR TAKEMore new anime coming down the pipeline, this time an urban fantasy romcom about two crazy kids meeting up again after years apart. Despite the title, our focus character, at least for this first episode, is Otogi, whose family are descended from ogres but don’t have many ogre like traits aside from crazy strength. Similarly, Nico goes away for witch training very young and has only now come back. This is a pretty normal looking setting aesthetically, but it’s clear that there was definitely a strong history of typical fantasy stuff here for a long time that has slowly faded and only preserved by some families. That’s a pretty interesting take on the subject that I look forward to seeing expanded on, even if it’s probably only going to be used for the sake of standard romcom stuff. What is possibly also related to that is the way that Nico uses her magic, which requires breaking down something that someone loves in order to repair something else, essentially using love and affection as a conservation of mass of some kind. That’s also a pretty neat idea that could lead to a lot of interesting plot and drama, especially since there is clearly some romance brewing between these two from the word go, though currently only from Nico’s side. And uh…yeah, that’s about all there is to say about the plot and characters as they are presented in this episode. The animation is pretty nice, so there’s that to look forward to. The side characters are kinda just stereotypical bullies at the moment but maybe there’s room for them to expand on that and perhaps tie that back into the fantasy aspect of things. Also Kyle Hebert is here as Otogi’s dad so that’s always neat to hear a familiar voice like this. It’s a charming enough show to be sure, it’s just that this first episode doesn’t really leave much of a first impression and there will probably be more to say on it as things develop, but for now it’s just a pretty basic premise and some neat worldbuilding concepts that are just there to be introduced rather than be fully fleshed out. And we’re going to be covering it for the remainder of the season anyway so look forward to hopefully more comprehensive analysis once it gives us something more to actually comment on! Or maybe all the reviews will be like this, who knows.
