OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Goku and Bulma’s groups meet up in the Second Demon World and land on the original home of the Namekians, while Arinsu and Majin Kuu challenge Tamagami Number One for the One Star Dragon Ball.OUR TAKEWe’re officially at the halfway mark for the series, and it brings us more lore and retcon drops, though mostly interesting ones and not the frustrating kind (those come later). So, turns out the Namekian race, which were first introduced as demons and then changed to aliens…are actually aliens from the Demon Realm, so it kinda splits the difference. Not only that, but the Glinds, the race that would go on to be selected as the Supreme Kais, were also from the Demon Realm (which was already revealed earlier) at the behest of a SUPER Majin named Rymus, who created the Multiverse, and looks suspiciously similar to Xeno, who is mainly known for destruction. Dragon Ball’s ever growing cosmology has always been pretty interesting, even if it often doesn’t touch the main characters directly, so getting these new bits is neat, though a bit sad since it’s probably the last of the bits made by Toriyama before his death. It’s also pretty impressive that they’ve managed to keep adding things like this and not feel like it’s stepping on something established or feeling superfluous. Again, that kind of retcon will come later, and I’ll be sure to point it out loud and clear when it does. But that’s the background stuff. What about the actual plot? Well, this episode is also pretty active, with Arinsu throwing Majin Kuu into his first fight and…he loses. I remember when he first appeared in the previous episode, a lot of theorizing went into people thinking he was going to be the next big bad for the series and a major threat! And THEN…he turned out like this and there was a lot of disappointment. That abated a bit as the series went on and people saw he had other strengths, especially in terms of personality, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. For now, it’s just cool to see the bad guys are being proactive in the Dragon Ball hunt. And lastly, this episode has a ton of funny AND meaningful character bits, like between Arinsu and Kuu, Vegeta and Hybis, and even getting some acknowledgement for Piccolo visiting what is essentially his ancestral homeland, even though he personally has no connection to it and the only one here is Neva, the Namekian who helped turn them all into kids in the first place. Anyway, onto the second half, where we’ve got plenty of hype moments coming up!
