Season Review: Broken Lance Season One

A piece of art is considered successful when it’s capable of pulling you into the atmosphere it’s meant to create. Broken Lance accomplishes that! But the way it pulls it off could’ve been better. That’s not to say the video fails, it entertains. But there are a few misses.

One thing is certain, the production’s ambitions are on full display with the kind of work they have done. Just because it’s a one-and-done, you shouldn’t think it’s a potboiler.

The 29-minute video gives a good glimpse of an effort to produce a cinematic masterpiece. With a gripping story, phenomenal animation quality, and stupendous background music, Broken Lance captures your attention at the start and doesn’t let it loose until the end. It’s a tale of robots, but you’d be wrong if you think human emotions can’t be spotted there. At the center of the tale lie elements of family, struggles, survival, conspiracies, and rocksteady determination.

But not all’s well. The fight scenes were chaotic – sometimes a bit too complex to understand. The story though gripping as mentioned earlier may seem a bit predictable to some. At times, you might also feel the show runs in a rushed manner. So much so that in the middle, the incidents appear crammed – and the deliberate attempt to wrap it out withing half an hour becomes evident.

All considered, Broken Lance is an impressive product of massive ambition and nice, though a bit uneven execution. It would’ve given the story a bit of more gleam if the running time was stretched a little. That said, it has everything we as viewers were hoping to find – solid content, action, meaning, and proper finish – something we don’t often get to see in one-off videos. We would consider the production to have been successful – from a fan standpoint – as by the end, you wish it had more episodes.
