OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Adria grounds Lunella from being Moon Girl out of concern for her safety, but Lunella ultimately disobeys this, causing a rift between them. Later, fearful the same thing will happen between her and her dad, Lunella takes him on a Ride Along and lets him pretend he’s helping her fight crime.OUR TAKEWe begin the final batch of episodes for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, a surprise hit that sadly fell victim to the fate of many a Disney cartoon these days, namely being unable to make it past a second season. After an episode focusing on transgender issues was shelved in acquiescence with the incoming Republican administration, the cancellation of this show feels that much more bitter, but let’s at least go into these last ten episodes appreciating what we have left. And we start off with picking up where the previous episode left us, which was Lunella’s family finding out her secret identity as Moon Girl and her mother putting her foot down and forbidding her from doing it. There’s plenty of understandable points on both sides of this sort of issue. Lunella is a child and fighting super-powered criminals comes with inherent lethal risk, but she’s also been doing it for some time now and has only nearly died…a few times! And there’s also the ever present question of “if I don’t do it, who will?” which is ultimately the deciding factor for Lunella deciding to keep at it against her mom’s wishes. And also the fact that there’s eight more episodes and it would be awful boring if the title character didn’t get to fight crime in them. The rest of her family comes around on it, but Adria does not, and continues to be cold about it into the next episode. However long this will go is unknown…but only because I don’t have time to watch all the episodes dropped on On Demand right now. Hopefully they resolve this before the unintended final episode and the show doesn’t end on a cliffhanger. The following episode is back to basics but with the growing rift between mother and daughter hanging in the air, but it’s fun and as worth your time as any other episode. It also includes Maria Hill as played by her MCU actor Cobie Smulders, which gives her a much more respectful appearance than her brief cameo and death in Secret Invasion! So at least there’s that. I don’t know if we’ll be covering any more of the remaining episodes, but if not, I’ll just say that it is a damn shame that this show was not only cancelled before its time but also used as an example to kowtow to bigotry. No matter what’s happening now to institutional protections for marginalized groups or whatever wannabe dictator tries grasping for power, the themes of this show and many others are going to outlive all of that and inspire those watching them to keep moving forward and continue the fight. Though it helps if you have a giant red dinosaur on your side.
