Overview:

The next phase of Blue Lock is underway! A select few of the strikers still left are chosen to participate in an exhibition match with the current U-20 Japanese team. If they win they become the new U-20 team and if they lose Blue Lock will come to an end.

Our Take:

I have very conflicted feelings when it comes to this season of Blue Lock. If it wasn’t for the last episode of the season it would be getting a lowwwww score. Unfortunately, while the episode was good it wasn’t so good that it made up for all the shortcomings of the season.

The biggest shortcoming had to be the animation. Some parts were okay but when it switched to CGI it was bad. Not the worst CGI I’ve ever seen but close. It took me out of a lot of the soccer parts and considering this anime is 95% soccer you can see how that’s pretty bad.

There were of course parts of the season that got me hyped but nothing was as insane as the last episode. A lot of that was because Matt Shipman gave the performance of a lifetime. He oftentimes plays shy characters that don’t yell or anything but with Rin, he lets it all out. Since Rin lost his shit leading into the last episode he spent most of the time going crazy on rivals and teammates alike.

As I said animation was a struggle but the last episode had some of the best animation I’ve seen in a sports anime in a long time. If the entire season had animation like that one episode then I would probably be telling you about the best sports anime I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, that’s not the case and instead, we are left wondering about what could have been.
