OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Gaku’s team at Trillion Game work to build up their mobile game to compete with Dragon Bank’s, eventually overtaking them in the charts.OUR TAKEIf there’s one thing I honestly did not expect for this show to get into, it was the exploitative dynamics of mobile games. Like I’m not proud to admit that I play way too many mobile games that I spend crazy amounts of money on, and I know I’m part of the problem, but I also never thought I would see the mechanics of how exactly mobile games exploit customers laid so naked and bare like this in a story…and THEN also make clear that the “good” guys are using them too, but it’s okay since they’re trying to beat a bigger company. When I first started watching this show, I already had an iffy feeling about it, mainly due to it being about two guys trying to become trillionaires during a time where, in my country, several billionaires are seizing influence of the government for the worse (and also posting this on a day where a general strike is being attempted), so you’ll understand how I’ve come to see this pursuit of wealth not the most admirable of goals or make for the most compelling of protagonists. And I highly doubt we’re going to see some major reversal this deep into the story where everyone comes to understand the inherent downsides of capitalism. And before you go thinking this was written in a different time to make sense of its values, that would be wrong. Trillion Game started in December of 2020, by which point the first Trump administration was close to wrapping up. Maybe it’s a cultural matter of how Japan has adapted in these times for all I know. Anyway, we’ve still got another quarter of this series to go, and the main takeaway from this episode is that Trillion Game is finally managing to catch up with Dragon Bank. Not just because they were able to make a good game, but also because they made it with heart and soul, leading to them expanding their work force and becoming a much more respectable company! What an inspiring message that definitely reflects the reality of the modern game creation landscape! Oh, and Gaku forgot to give himself a salary so he got kicked out of his apartment and now he’s living in the office building. That’s rough, buddy. So, now how will Dragon Bank react to being unseated by an up and coming group that’s pissing on their lawn? I guess we’ll find out as we enter the fourth quarter of the show. Maybe we’ll also see how the heck they became billionaires. Such a respectable dream, for sure.
