English Dub Review: Dragon Ball Daima “Collar”

By David Kaldor

February 22, 2025

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Bulma’s team finally make it to the Demon Realm, while Goku’s team close in on the Three Star Dragon Ball.OUR TAKEI know, I know, I’ve mentioned before how we’re very much in the set up phase. Not much reason to mention it again, aside from padding out this review, but yeah we’re still here. HOWEVER, that phase ends now, as next week will bring us the first BIG fight of the series as Goku faces the third Tamagami, protector of the Dragon Ball. I won’t get into spoilers (even though it’s unlikely you’re reading this if you haven’t also been watching the sub) but this fight was a major turning point, not just for the story but the overall enjoyment people were having for this show. It’s also quite strange considering the episode the sub is on now, the penultimate one, and how much the stakes have raised…while also feeling pretty dang weightless at the same time. With only one episode left to air, Daima is for sure going to have a complicated legacy, not just because it was Toriyama’s last Dragon Ball project, but also because, according to a recent interview, they apparently did not fully plan out the story before they began animating. That’s usually understandable to a degree with a show that is, say, adapting an ongoing manga, but not so much for a show that was planned to be finished in twenty episodes. That amount usually comes with an outline built in…except in this case, I guess.Okay okay, I should probably mention stuff about this episode specifically. Well, we get a bit of development for Pansy, which will in fact be her ONLY development, as Shin helps get her collar off with his powers and frees her from those who had control over her. Ironically enough, Glorio has no collar but is being controlled by someone else, though for what reason is still a bit unclear. Also Bulma, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Hybis are able to begin making their way to the Demon Realm, though really the highlight here is Hybis, who gets the majority of the funny jokes in this series, so he’s doing just fine I guess. But yeah, I cannot tell you enough how glad I am we are finally done with this third of the show, because now we can actually get into the stuff that really got hype and interest to truly build up. Big fights, new characters, hype moments that actually broke the internet, and things that will live on as some of the best parts of the franchise. But we won’t get to any of those UNTIL…next week.
