Our Take
The Morning Mimosa crew is back and this time Hayley’s interning. This week’s episode is actually a special one because we are halfway through the show’s 21st season and it’s the first episode of the New Year so kicking off with a mimosa is pretty damn timely. Fans of the daytime talk show starring Trish (Casey Wilson) and Suze (June Diane Raphael) will be happy to both see their return and then go back and time and learn more all about a time when they took their jobs more seriously.
When American Dad, or any show, takes minor characters and then expands on them it’s always a win because in the case of Trish and Suze where we’ve gotten the chance to see them a bunch over the years though not exactly in a recurring fashion, it makes for a bit of variety in an episode. Not unlike when we learn about Todd Fox and his crazy ass pet octopus Kristof. I will say though seeing the girls revert back to their episodic selves and not experiencing any growth from their experiences at all was a bit of a letdown, but I’ll survive.
The same can’t be said for the sick Smith family that never seems to learn their lesson. We’ve seen a number of series go the sick route and it makes for funny which is no different here. Klaus’ bowl going completely goth and my favorite line of the episode with Stan muttering to the TV “this has Hayley written alllll over it!” had me dying. Add in Jeff’s lone responsibility to try and save the day only to take forever to do so and we got a pretty solid B-plot.
I actually hope we get to see the return of both Kristof and the monkey with the chalkboard in future episodes because this show is rather underrated with how it handles animal characters and I need more of it. Whether or not that ever comes to fruition is anyone’s guess, but American Dad kicks off 2025 with a fastball inside.
