OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Kenshin strikes out alone to find the mentor that taught him Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu, Hiko Seijuro, in order to finally learn its greatest technique.OUR TAKEWe have had at least a couple different breaks for the Crunchyroll dub shows we cover in the past few weeks, which makes sense considering we’ve had Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve/Day all in quick succession. But at least among the ones I’m covering, there’s only been a couple that have stuck it out every single time, and among them is Rurouni Kenshin. Not sure whether it’s the fact that it airs on a Thursday or that they have so many episodes that they want to keep the pace going, but the dub team always has an episode ready to go every week. Either way, it’s good that they didn’t delay, since after that odd detour into filler town, it’s nice to have something to wash that out of our mouths, and what better way to do that than not only meeting Kenshin’s old master, but also finally reuniting him with Yahiko and, more importantly, Kaoru. This reunion has been a long time coming since Kenshin left for Kyoto at the end of last season and now, over a half a season later, they’re back together. But while that is heartwarming to see and we will see more of it next episode, that’s actually not the more important or interesting part of the episode for me. That would be meeting Hiko Seijuro, or at least the man using that title, who taught Kenshin his patented sword techniques and now refuses to teach him more. This is probably where it has felt the most like someone has been able to take Kenshin to task on his choices, even more so than the increasing amount of people chewing him out for pretending like he needs to go after Shishio alone. For Seijuro, he taught Kenshin Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu in order to give him the power to protect, but this banged up right against the war going on that would eventually form the Meiji government, and aligning that power with a side may stop the fighting for now but only lead to further troubles down the road…which it did. Now the impact of that has come back to bite them as Shishio has risen from the rubble of that conflict, and Kenshin wishes to be able to thwart him once and for all. So, how will he be able convince his master to gain this final technique? I guess we’ll find out next week, because this show ain’t missing its streak!
