OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)A teenager steps in front of a train after viewing a video, which leads to a doctor naming her at risk of suicide, but Ameku thinks something else is going on.OUR TAKEAfter last week’s two parter introducing us to the main cast in setting, this week brings us what will likely be indicative of a more typical self-contained episode of the series. And if this is a sign of what is to come for the next nine episodes…it’s not really impressing me much. The formula we’re given is pretty typical for a procedural show, which is not exactly a problem in and of itself: Character who will become patient faces an odd medical incident, they are given an expected diagnosis that logically makes sense but is overlooking a crucial detail, Ameku will notice something is up, Yu (her Watson) will be skeptical, Ameku will test her theory and be right, end of episode. The closest parallel I can compare this show to would be the long-running House M.D., mainly because that was also a procedural medical show that adapted Sherlock Holmes as doctor, which many viewers were keen to point out when THIS show first started. But House had the benefit of having forty five minutes to be able to stretch out the twists and turns of the mystery that was happening in the patient. They could try things out and then those would seemingly help but then escalate as the tension grew higher before someone clocked the real reason things were happening. In this case…one of the twin sisters gets put in a seeming trance by a mysterious video and walks in front of a train. A doctor misdiagnoses her with being suicidal due to a bunch of stress going on in her life. Ameku tests the video out, it apparently has subliminal messages that effect people with epilepsy, so it turns out the twins have epilepsy. Also apparently a doctor has beef with Ameku because she changed out the meds of a patient that doctor misdiagnosed, just like that same doctor misdiagnosed the first girl who got affected by that video. Seems like that doctor is lucky she hasn’t lost her job, considering this has happened twice now. But yeah, this isn’t really a very compelling use of this premise or this type of character, so hopefully this is just a sign of them still finding the show and future episodes will be live up to the potential of what this series can be.
