Review: Universal Basic Guys “Sheet Shock”

Overview

After feeling slighted by a Navy recruiter, Mark sets out to join an elite unit of the Marines, only to be thwarted by his inability to properly make a bed; David teams up with a veteran, who reveals stories that are stranger than fiction.

Our Take

Sheet Shock refers to what happens when Mark isn’t able to make the bed so it shocks the system of the US Military so much that it creates an Expendables rip-off team that has to go into this alternate universe filled with rainbow hell.

It may seem that I may be coming down on this week’s return episode of Universal Basic Guys, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. This week’s episode may be the funniest episode of the year and that’s saying a lot because Universal Basic Guys has had a lot of hysterically funny episodes in its first season.

One-time animation artist turned writer Jordan Young contributes to this week’s episode and the former BoJack Horseman brings all of the weird with him on this one. And is it just a fit of irony that Jordan, who used to write for FOX’s Golan the Insatiable starring Rob Riggle, would re-team with one-time Marine in voicing a key character in this week’s episode.

Ever wonder what would happen if Universal Basic Guys did its best impression of a Rick and Morty episode? This is it. The execution was rather flawless and loaded with funny moments that this is one that deserves a rewatch on Hulu for sure.
