English Dub Season Review: Ranma ½ Season One

There are many iconic anime from the 20th century that have been held up as pillars of what the medium is today. Dragon Ball, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Fist of the North Star, Tenchi Muyo, Uresai Yatsura, among many others that influenced viewers of that time into the creators of today. And among THOSE others is another show, Ranma ½, that helped pave the way for the Harem comedies of the future, as well as apparently help a bunch of Trans kids figure themselves out. The story follows Ranma Saotome, a young man coming home to Japan to find he’s newly engaged to hothead Akane Tendo, but he also brought home a fun new conversation starter: whenever he’s hit with cold water, his body changes into a girl, while hot water changes him back. And thus begins the story of two crazy kids warming up to each other while other girls and boys try to pull them apart, with some even going after both! Now that series joins the ranks of many reboots and remakes of classic anime, and it seems this one is, at least currently, stopping after twelve episodes. So, how WERE those first twelve episodes, and do they give us more to look forward to?As a newcomer to this series who has not seen any of the previous versions, I immediately saw the appeal many had mentioned about the series before, and felt the fun atmosphere and enthralling tangling of the many romantic threads that play out over the course of the season. Ranma and Akane naturally attract challengers from either side that wish to take Ranma or Akane or even girl Ranma, but are often thwarted by one or the other or both. We also see that, despite initially being at each others’ throats, Ranma and Akane grow to genuinely care for one another, and even if you’ve seen all the tropes in this hundreds of times before, you’ll probably find yourself growing to cheer it on. But I would say the greatest flaw for the show is that it sometimes tends to throw out logic or common sense to keep the comedy and romantic tension aflame, which sometimes doesn’t lead to me rooting on anybody, especially in the last story arc of the season. Still, there’s no doubt more coming and with that, plenty of chances to improve upon this aspect. So, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see as to when that will happen.
