Overview

Andy and new friend Rikko take their chances in the Sthetica Glam Slam, only to learn the world of wrestling aesthetics and style is more complex than they imagined; they seek to understand this city and Poblana’s connection to it.

Our Take

In Kill Bill Volume 2 there’s a whole scene where Beatrix Kiddo has to undergo intense training under the tutelage of Pai Mei. That’s a lot of what this week’s episode of Invincible Fight Girl is like. Everything from the montage to Andy’s nearly giving up on trying to land the perfect strike which is nearly identical to the aforementioned martial arts masters’ from the mind of Quentin Tarantino.

The slight difference here is that we get more characters to work with in the form of Mikey and Craig strengthening their bond of being not only friends to Andy but also looking out for each other and working together to achieve common goals and give us silly antics in the process. This helps break up the more serious nature of Andy’s plot and helps us get to know our ancillary characters a little better.

In “The Perfect Strike”, writer/creator Juston Gordon-Montgomery continues to straddle the line between loving homage to film and anime and a strong semblance to aforementioned well-known properties. Fortunately, the “B”-plot gives us just enough to where Invincible Fight Girl is infused with enough creativity that everything is still working, but I need to see some more originality moving forward if we’re going to see this show fight for a coveted “Best New Series” trophy.
