Our Take:
It has been a while since this anime couple captured the hearts of multiple fans, including me. With word spreading that the second season of My Happy Marriage is premiering in January, there’s no doubt we’ll be reuniting with Miyo and Kiyoka sooner than later. But, before we start preparing for the upcoming season, Netflix was kind enough to release an OVA epilogue of the show’s first season. This serves as the bridge between the two seasons, which offers a sweet reunion with the characters we’ve grown to love and teases what we’ll expect in season two.
The season one finale concluded with Miyo and Kiyoka attending an essential social party as they return to their normal lives. This OVA episode continues where the finale left off, further showcasing their attendance at the party and meeting with several attendees. One of them includes Hazuki’s son, Asahi, who has grown uncomfortable around Miyo due to his jealousy that she’s spending too much time with Hazuki. The other is Prince Takaihito, who informs them of his father, the Emperor, and his involvement with the events surrounding the Saimoris and the Usubas. As it turns out, the Emperor plots to separate Miyo and Kiyoka due to his fear of Miyo’s Dream Sight ability, which will likely serve as one of the key elements of season two, with the other being Arata proposing to be Miyo’s bodyguard.
“The Shape of My Happiness” delivered a long-awaited tranquil and feel-good closing chapter of the show’s first season and provided a storyline worthy of our reunion with the happily married couple, especially when it involves the importance of family. Of course, it isn’t without a few elements that could serve a role in the upcoming second season, including the Emperor’s true plan. Most importantly, it offered many things I enjoyed about My Happy Marriage, a surprisingly engaging and heartwarming anime whose fairy-tale aesthetics and gorgeous animation smile upon its romance tropes. In case you’re wondering, I am still looking forward to seeing how this happy marriage will continue when season two arrives in January.
