English Dub Review: Dandadan “A Dangerous Woman Arrives”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Turbo Granny reveals that Okarun’s missing organs are contained within golden spheres.  Aira, who has found one, now has the ability to see spirits.

Our Take:

Well, as it turns out, Okarun’s balls are still missing even though he and Momo beat Turbo Granny at her own game.  Even worse, the spirit responsible for robbing his testicles seemed to have misplaced them.  Unsurprisingly, trapping her aura inside a cat-like doll was her ideal punishment for her mistake.  So, now it looks like the two students are off on another spiritual adventure, but with Turbo Granny reluctantly assisting them in gathering Okarun’s balls, which are inside the golden spheres.

However, it also leaves me questioning how it’ll compare to the characters’ showdown against Turbo Granny because the animators did a lot of cooking with the style and direction, mainly in the fourth episode. Long story short, they cooked up a delicious cuisine in that episode.  While this one may not have the same type of energy as the fourth episode, it still packs a satisfying punch regarding its humor, plot, and second half.  In addition to the golden balls, the protagonists discover that one of them is in the hands of the pink-haired student from last week’s episode: Aira Shiratori.  She not only gains the power to see spirits, who can now see her, but also proclaims herself as the “hero” chosen by God to save the world from the “demonic” Momo.  Unfortunately, this resulted in Aira being the primary target of another yokai called the “Acrobatic Silky”, who had been stalking her when she was a child.

It’s tough to say how Momo and Okarun’s battle against Acrobatic Silky will compare to the fourth episode since it ended on a cliffhanger.  But, if it’s anything like that grandeur episode, I would be satisfied with the outcome.  If not, I hope the next episode will deliver some enticing sequences to reach closer to that height.  There’s also a surprising lack of alien activity throughout the series since their appearance in the first episode, so I’m guessing they’re either dead or the show is saving them for the climax.  Since I’m still engrossed by the plot in Dandadan, this absence doesn’t bother me.
