Our Take:
For some reason, the ninth episode of True Beauty doesn’t list the title and description on the Crunchyroll website. Fortunately, I found out what the episode title was on a different website before viewing it. It doesn’t affect the episode entirely, but it did leave me questioning Crunchyroll’s work schedule regarding the organization of its website. However, it isn’t as bad as Sujin cheating her way to the top and attempting to humiliate Jugyeong for good. Even one of Jugyeong’s friends, Sua, is just as mad as I am toward that bitch. But, until we see what Sujin’s got planned next, Jugyeong has another problem that can’t be ignored: her first slumber party with her new friends.
This may seem like another harmless episode designed as filler like the festival episode, but that isn’t the case. “Game of Truth” finally has Jugyeong faced with a “life-changing” decision to show her true self to her new friends, thanks to a harmless game called the “Truth Game”. Understandably, she’s still worried that her new friends will turn against her if she reveals her “ugly” side. However, after discovering that Suho likes Jugyeong without makeup, Jugyeong gains enough confidence to reveal her “big secret” to her friends. Unsurprisingly, the episode ends with her friends accepting Jugyeong as her true self. It’s no lie that the episode used the slumber party element to advance Jugyeong’s character development, even though the pacing is still a bit hectic, and the ending was predictably corny. But it also enhances the show’s message of self-confidence and acceptance despite its subpar emotional depth. So now the question is whether everyone else can accept Jugyeong’s natural self without being asshats toward her.
