Overview (Spoilers Below):
While contemplating his perilous choice to drink the vial of vampire blood, Rentt recounts the story of his past and the events that inspired him to follow his dream of becoming a Mythril-class adventurer.
Our Take:
What a way to cap off the first chapter of Rentt’s undead journey: with a life-changing decision between drinking vampire blood and remaining in his ghastly form forever. But before he makes that choice, the undead adventurer finally explains why he’s desperate to become a Mythril-class adventurer. Via a flashback, Rentt clarifies that his childhood friend, Jinlin, wanted to be an adventurer, as he was formally afraid of his own shadow. However, everything changed tragically when a wolf monster arrived and killed Jinlin and their families. Fortunately, Rentt was saved by a Mythril-class adventurer named Wilfried Ryukker.
With this flashback, we gain a better understanding of Rentt’s perseverance to be promoted to Mythril class. His admiration for Wilfried’s actions and even his tragic childhood propelled him to prevent others from suffering the same fate he had. Despite the bigger issue involving his condition, Rentt never lost sight of achieving his dream and his generosity toward the other adventurers he encountered. That includes Rize and Laura, who had just formed a party with rookie Rina. Remember her from the second episode? Because I did, and it took the show long enough to acknowledge her again via a cameo appearance. Of course, Rentt’s explanation resulted in him deciding to drink the blood and surprise! He’s now a vampire but also looking more human than ever, so that’s another problem solved.
“Rentt Faina” concludes the first season of The Unwanted Undead Adventurer with a further evaluation of Rentt’s journey, which is enough to make his familiar traits and generosity tolerable. As for what will happen in season two, the main focus will be on Rentt continuing his pursuit of becoming a Mythril-class adventurer as a vampire to reunite with Wilfried and find the monster that killed his family. It’s also possible that he’ll run into some familiar faces again during his trek, including Rina, but it’ll also cause further conflict with Lorraine’s affection toward Rentt. However, the only plot point that I hope will get resolved in season two is the disappearance of the novice adventurers because that hasn’t been brought up again since the eighth episode. Besides that, this is another watchable action fantasy anime whose concept could have room for improvement in another season.
