English Dub Review: Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Disturbance “To Kyoto”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Kenshin makes his way to Kyoto, but his friends rally to see if they’re up to follow.OUR TAKESo, I’m a big Toonami fan from back in the day, and I have a solid memory of Ruroni Kenshin being a major part of that block. Thus, even though I haven’t seen the first season of this remake, I remember…enough that I can still review it competently, though I’ll probably go back and watch that season to be safe. Still, a bit of a shame that the author and artist, Nobuhiro Watsuki, was convicted of possession of child pornography, and that’s something everyone is going to have to be aware of every time they think of this series. Because I’m going to bring it up in some form EVERY SINGLE WEEK, because it’s fucked up that this guy still gets to be in this industry. So look forward to that as we go through a half a year of talking about a modern remake of a beloved classic anime and manga that was, and I cannot stress this enough, made by a man who was convicted in court for possession of child pornography. Now, with that out of the way, we should probably talk about the episode itself, don’t you think? Wouldn’t be much of a review if we didn’t do that.Again, not the clearest recollection of where the previous season of this left off, but it’s clear that something spooked Kenshin into going to Kyoto in order to stop something that is a significant threat. And the thing about Kenshin compared to everyone else he has allied with is that he is insanely strong as a fighter, and while Sanosuke, his Vegeta/Sasuke equivalent, is closer than most, he’s not up to fighting Saito, someone more on Kenshin’s level. That said, whatever incident they all went through, it’s clear that this was a big kick in the pants that will inspire everyone to get all their shit together and follow after Kenshin. As for what little else I remember about this upcoming arc, we’ve got a lot of memorable enemies on the horizon, and a lot of really intense fights and dramatic moments. And all of that is something I’m looking forward to seeing play out, especially in updated visuals, acting, and directing. But what I’m not looking forward to is, and I can’t stress this enough, that this may be benefiting a convicted pedophile by encouraging the idea that people like that can skate by as long as their work is profitable enough. See ya next week!
