English Dub Review: Makeine – Too Many Losing Heroines “Am I Actually Just Some Unseasoned Rando Who Drops In for the Last Episode With the Losing Heroine?”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Troubled by (accurate) rumors spreading that she doesn’t have a boyfriend, Anna decides try going on a fake adult date with Kazuhiko (taking pictures of things “he” does) to make people think differently,OUR TAKEAnd that’s a wrap on Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines, at least for this season. But apparently there’s something different about this season finale, and it’s that it is apparently an original episode written by Takibi Amamori, the author of the original light novels. I can’t say why they decided to go with this route, though it could be for numerous reasons. They could’ve been made aware that this would possibly be the only season and wanted something that would feel most like a coda to all of the development the characters had been through thus far. Or they might’ve had a big arc starting up right after the festival arc and didn’t want to set up too much of that if there was a possibility of not getting a second season. Or there’s even the possibility they simply wanted it to only be a season and decided to end things here. A lot of anime adaptations are often just commercials for the source material, hence why they don’t often go on for very long, and I’d say this show has definitely advertised its own material pretty well (even if I don’t know where the heck to buy the light novels themselves legally). So, with this last episode, does it feel like this could be a satisfying ending? Lemon and Chika have pretty thoroughly had their warranted character development so it makes sense that neither of them are BIG parts of this, but they’re still part of the main cast so they’re also involved to a degree. Meanwhile, the main stars of it are Kazuhiko, Anna, and their dynamic. While they’re very clearly not a romantic couple, they have managed to form a pretty notable friendship in just these twelve episodes, though Anna still seems to be hung up on making people believe she has boyfriend, for reasons I’m not sure she even understands anymore. Like I doubt she still wants to make her former crush jealous, so it seems to just be about putting on a mature appearance…which she also has no idea how to live up to. But ultimately, it kinda seems like the biggest takeaway from this is that she’s still just a kid, putting on the airs of maturity based on what she thinks that looks like, while Kazuhiko is just going along with it because she’s the first friend he truly made. Whether that means these two are heading towards a love epiphany about each other is anyone’s guess, but it’ll have to be in a future season we may or may not get. And next week, we’ll look back on the show as a whole to see if this existing season was worth it! Spoiler alert for that review: I would say yeah, it was.
