English Dub Review: Dandadan “It’s a Granny Versus Granny Clash”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

After Momo’s grandmother temporarily suppresses the evil spirit within Okarun, she says that a game of tag may be the key to defeating it for good.

Our Take:

Momo has been mentioning her estranged relationship with her grandmother, Seiko Ayase, since the start of the show.  But besides her grandmother’s fascination with spirits affecting Momo’s ordinary life, we haven’t seen her and her expertise in action.  That is until this episode, which has Seiko arriving in time to suppress Turbo Granny inside Okarun, or Ken, whichever name works for everyone.  However, don’t let the term “grandmother” fool you, as Seiko appears to be in her 20s, a little older than Momo and Okarun.  Don’t ask how she looked younger because I don’t have that answer yet.  Perhaps we’ll find that out in later episodes.

After keeping Turbo Granny contained, we spent the remaining episode with Seiko explaining the solution to beating Turbo Granny, which is fused by a bound spirit inside the tunnel.  In short, the episode expands on its world-building a bit while Seiko gets Momo and Okarun ready for their battle against Turbo Granny.  While Dandadan deserves credit for its attention-grabbing action scenes, the series also continues to satisfy with its comedy, mainly the authentic on-and-off chemistry between its protagonists and Okarun’s desperation to use the bathroom.  As for Seiko, she’s basically another typical badass granny with an attitude, but the end of the episode showcased that she has her way of expressing her love for Momo.  While not as action-packed and frenetic as the previous episodes, “It’s a Granny Versus Granny Clash” is a consistently entertaining breather from the visual chaos that favors character moments, humor, and the world’s youngest grandmother.
