English Dub Review: True Beauty “I thought becoming pretty would make a difference”

Overview (Spoilers Below): Seojun and Suho catch Hyunwoo red-handed, but Juyyeong’s blind date points the finger at someone else.  Shocked by said accusations, Jugyeong decides to confront the friend who seemingly tries to sabotage her.

Our Take: The seemingly “harmless” date between Jugyeong and Hyunwoo had already turned into a nightmare when Hyunwoo was caught in the act.  However, it wasn’t just Hyunwoo pulling this harmful action on Jugyeong.  The real ringleader behind this inexcusable action was Sujin, who was responsible for setting up this blind date for Jugyeong.  It was evident at this point that Sujin would do this to ensure her easy victory at the beauty competition, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a right to be angry with that bitch.  After all, Sujin’s the reason Suho got sent to the hospital after being hit by a car. To make matters worse, Sujin started spreading false rumors about Jugyeong instead of taking responsibility for her actions, resulting in Jugyeong being bullied again.  That’s your typical “bad bitch” persona for you.  However, this also resulted in Jugyeong coming to a realization.  She thought that making herself look pretty should stop the bullying, but instead, the real reason is that she kept running away from her problems instead of facing them.  We’re only five episodes in, and we finally reached that pivotal moment of Jugyeong learning to stand up for herself and take the fight to Sujin.  Unsurprisingly, it was satisfying to see this development shine. The episode further emphasizes its theme of bullying through Seojun’s flashback.  It’s revealed that Seojun and Suho were once friends at high school with another student, Seyeon, who’s inspired to become a musician.  However, Seyeon killed himself as a result of being cyber-bullied, leaving Seojun to blame Suho for his death.  While tragic in its own right, this sequence hasn’t quite nailed this concept through its direction like the other episodes.  Hopefully, these boys will learn to put that past behind them for Jugyeong’s sake.
