Because of a crappy hit-piece from THR written a year or so ago, there’s this notion going around that Justin Roiland wasn’t a huge piece of the creative process when it came to Rick and Morty at the time of his, now unwarranted, termination. One thing you may not know is that Justin was, in fact, was the singular creative mind when it came to the franchise up to and including the merchandise of which he was a BIG part of the brand’s licensing opportunities. This is clearly evident as soon as you open the cover for Rick and Morty: Seasons 1 – 7 on DVD.
Simply looking at the menu of special features available, you’ll notice that the special features are in stark contrast from the lone season in which Justin wasn’t part of the show compared to prior seasons. Why? Because the heart of the show is gone. All that’s left is all of the season seven prelude shit already made available on YouTube included as the special features. Anybody who thinks that this show is better off with Justin, there you have it, Rick and Morty is just a product now.
In any event, for Rick and Morty fans who haven’t picked up each of the seasons of the show on DVD in years past, I’d recommend buying the six season collection rather than this one, because at least you’ll have the show in its prime. There’s a reason why season seven didn’t even produce an Emmy win and didn’t even get nominated at the most recent Emmys. It’s not even worth it anymore to hear the season seven episodes uncensored because voice actors Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden don’t possess the crass sensibilities that Justin had when he was all of the voices. It’s really just sad to see.
Save the $60 on the 1-7 collection and instead get the 1-6 collection that is 50% cheaper at the time of this writing.
