OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Two women, Miwa and Yukari, encounter a young man named Ryu who may be the bartender they need to create the famous “Glass of God”, a serving technique that accommodates any customer.OUR TAKEAnother new anime up, this time on an incredibly niche subject. Not the first time I’ve covered a show with a topic that barely anyone is going to understand, though definitely the first time I’ve covered a show about the topic of bartending, something I most assuredly would never think of as a story worthy field, but here we are. Not that I have anything against it, even though I myself don’t drink, just that my first thought would be that it sounds rather limited in its plot options. Perhaps I’ll be surprised, though this first episode seems more about just introducing this skilled guy, Ryu, in a manner that somewhat reminds me off Soma from Food Wars. Not in the sense that I think Ryu’s drinks are going to make people cream their pants or blow their clothes off, as that sounds like a pretty easy way to get a health code violation, but more that he is introduced through his skill and pure personality first as opposed to any very distinct character traits. And even Soma started out with some ambition, which makes sense for a story that involves competition, but so far there doesn’t seem to be any of that in Bartender. We’ve got another eleven episodes to go, so I’m sure they’ll introduce a clearer plot some time next week, but there’s also a bit of a pettier issue in this show for me. You may be familiar with ASMR videos where people with soft voices make soothing noises and such. Well, that’s honestly kind of unnerving to me and at its worst I can REALLY hate it. And it seems for whatever reason, the direction for this voice acting was to be as soft in voice as possible, which is driving me up a goddamn wall. Again, I am pretty sure this isn’t going to be a problem for many other people, and it may just be me with the issue, but boy did it throw me off through my first watch of the episode. But hey, there’s a standard for it now (a BAR if you will), so maybe I’ll get used to it over time, or it will just continue to annoy me. Either way, I won’t need to bring it up much anymore since I’m getting it out of my system now. Now, get your bar tabs ready because you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here. Oh yeah, did you know this actually a reboot? Maybe I’ll get into that next time.
