English Dub Review: Helck “The Remote Island Village”

By David Kaldor

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)Helck and Vermillio find themselves on an unknown island and try to adapt while they find a way out, helped by Helck being able to make a whole refurbished house with his own strength. The two are soon found by locals and brought to their chief. Meanwhile, Azudra tries to find them and bring them home.OUR TAKESo, faithful reader, do you remember a few weeks ago when this show began and I immediately showed a dislike for the dynamic for Helck and Vermillio, with it being pretty easy to boil down to Helck being a solid dude who could do no wrong while Vermillio just sat in the corner and seethed while waiting for him to turn out to be bad? Well, that continues to be the crux of the character work in this episode, with it continuing to be repetitive and annoying, partly due to Vermillio’s English voice actress, Kira Vincent-Davis, digging into the recesses of my soul with just how annoying her character can be. Not that I think she’s a bad voice actor, I’ve heard her do fine in other shows, it’s just this one that seems to not work for me. And heck, the simplicity of this feels so core to this show’s plot that I could probably copy this entire paragraph into every future review and it would probably fit just as well as in this one. Might as well if this is going to be an issue for me every single episode. But I would never resort to something so lazy, no sir.Anyway, now that we’re away from that initial tournament and the events that occurred last episode, we have a chance to assess them and where they might go from here. Helck recognized the winged warriors who turned out to be humans, but he and other characters, including Vermillio’s colleague Azudra (no doubt there’s a white tiger and a black tortoise demon around here somewhere) find themselves wondering how these humans “awakened to become heroes” as they put it. From the way they describe it, “awakening” is not a common or easy thing to accomplish, yet apparently several humans have managed this and have taken on greater, non-human looking forms as a result. Helck seemingly accomplished this which is why he is so strong as he is, but perhaps he did it in a more natural way, while the winged warriors have found an easier and possibly more costly way, with some risky results. I guess we’ll figure out what the heck is going on there at some point, but for now we get to see what’s going on at this weird island. Can’t say I’m all that interested in that, but we’ll get something to talk about next week.
