English Dub Review: The Witch and the Beast “Beauty and Death: Final Act”

Overview

Phanora and the detective are forcibly taken in by the necromancer and his army of strays. He then reveals his true motive behind raising the undead…

That was a rather uneventful climax.

I’m grateful that it didn’t devolve into a mess of over the top twists much like the climax of episode 3– but for a “Final Act” it felt quite hollow. Majority of the episode is spent with Phanora and the necromancer talking in the same room. Not much is done to keep things more visually engaging and while there is some interesting lore dumping– such as casually confirming that this world follows the rules of reincarnation and necromancy interrupts that – the big confrontation between the two doesn’t feel all that tense.

There’s so good ol’ fashion blood and guts in the middle of the episode to catch the viewers attention. It’s hard to not get a little excited when finding out Phanora has her own army of the undead who are wholly dedicated to being by her side, at the cost of never being able to participate in the cycle of reincarnation. Same for Yohan as well, finding out that he was also already dead from the start was an expected– yet fun twist. I feel like I can get behind the show the most when its depravity is at its most gruesome.

Phanora turns the necromancer into another one of the undead, a high functioning one so it’s not all bad, forcing him to properly revive all the lives he ruined in the past. Wrapping things up in a neat wicked little bow. The detective who also tagged along in the last episode is still around, but doesn’t really do much other than sit back and watch for most of the runtime. Again, this “Final Act” wasn’t as groan worthy as episode 3… But it was unfortunately pretty lacking. Here’s to next week where we go back to our dynamic duo.
