English Dub Review: The Kingdoms of Ruin “Stand by him. Stand by her.” / “Coronation”

Overview:

Adonis and Doroka return to Earth as they continue their respective missions.

Our Take:

Now that he and Doroka are back on Earth, Adonis has a revenge plot to carry out. Adonis still wants to destroy all of humanity, but Doroka wants to stop the fighting. She’s not happy that the humans killed all of the other witches, but she believes that seeking revenge is a never-ending battle.

They don’t see eye-to-eye, but they learn more about each other as they travel through the desert in these two episodes. A biker gang rescues them in the first episode. Adonis is ready to leave Doroka behind, but the gang leader makes Doroka realize why Adonis is so determined to get revenge. She ends up tagging along with him and they travel together.

In the second episode, they enter an abandoned town and find a prisoner. He’s the only living person left in the town and he tells them where the nearest city city is. Doroka wants to help him, but Adonis tells her the only help he needs is peace and quiet. Dorothea also becomes coronated as the new emperor in this episode. It was already revealed that she’s a witch and she devised the others witches’ destruction. Adonis and Doroka are still unaware of this, but it will only be a matter of time before they find out.

The side characters we meet in these episodes are pretty interesting. The biker gang leader, Punch, actually met Adonis and Chloe many years prior. That explains why he saved Adonis and Doroka, as well as why he knows so much about him. The prisoner seems to have lost a loved one who was a witch, which explains why he acts so suspicious around Adonis and Doroka.

This show has quite the tonal shift in this two episodes. It’s been doom and gloom mixed with violence and gore for the past few episodes. These two episodes have some tension, but not as much violence. Doroka goes back to being the comic relief character that she was in the first episode. Adonis is pulled into her antics every now and then, which is a weird dynamic for him. That being said, I kind of like the change of pace. This show is still a mess with little sense of direction, but at least Adonis is starting to gain new emotions besides anger. I’m glad to see that he and Doroka are slowly staring to get along and I hope that their partnership continues to grow.
